PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Production technology of vegetable is easy compare with crops, tree. But farmers should remember some important point releted to vegetable production.here i have presented these points.

  Selecting a Site
      - Full sun
         a. Most vegetables require full sun
         b. Leafy vegetables will do the best in partial shade
      - Loose, fertile, well drained soil
         a. Sandy loam soil is preferred
      - Close to home
      - Near a water supply
      - Stay away from roots and shade of trees and shrubs
 Site Preparation
      - New Site
a.We should be remove sod or kill grass with a herbicide
         b. Also  weeds especially perennials (quackgrass & thistles)should be controled
      - Soil Preparation
         a. should be add organic matter, well rotted manure or compost.
         b.Should be raised beds
            - earlier warm up in the spring and quicker to dry out
         c. Should be test soil if desired
            - Normal fertilizer recommendation without testing
2 lbs. 5-10-5 per 100 sq. ft. of garden area

         e. Roto-til or spade to the depth of 4-6"
 Planning the garden

      - At first we should draw a plan of the garden that include  the following things:

a.should  lay out rows lengthwise in garden to make roto-tilling easier
b.should be keep wide row beds for certain crops (carrots, beets, etc)
         c. Should  plant all perennials in a corner or on an end
         d. Should put vine crops on the edge or next
to corn
         e. Should lant Sweet Corn in a block rather than long rows
          f.
Should put the tall growing vegies on the north side
         g.
Should save space for planting warm season crops
h.We should avoid planting a vegetable in the same spot as last year
          I. Successive plantings of short season crops

      - Purchasing seeds
         a. should be Select the right variety
 Planting The Garden

      - Times for planting vegetables
         a. Hardy vegetables (tolerate freezing temperatures) - April 20th
         b. Half Hardy vegetables (tolerate light frost) - May 10th
         c. Tender vegetables (past danger of last killing frost) - May 25

      - Planting techniques
         a. Seed bed  should be prepared with care.
         b. At the time of planting, fllowing things should be keep in mind
-Depth of planting (on heavy, clay soil; plant shallow)
            -Small seeds , larger seeds
            -Treated seed
            -Watering
     - Transplanting into the garden                                                              At the time of transplanting, we must be consider the following things.         a. Hardening off plants
         b. Best in late afternoon, or on cloudy days with little wind
         c. Disturb roots as little as possible
         d. Don't cover plant leaves; remove flowers and fruits
 Thinning and Weeding
-we should done thinning , when weeding first time
      - Weeding the garden
a.we should remove weeds when small
b.we should not water on the same day of weeding
d.should avoid deep hoeing that can damage plant roots
         e. Organic mulches should be used for weed control (slugs love mulch)
          f. shouldn't use herbicides in the home garden
 Watering
-Watering is important after planting & when flowers and fruits are forming
      - Need 1-2" per week during dry periods (65-130 gal. per 100 sq. ft.)
      - Soil should be wetted to a depth of 6-12" each time you water

         - should remain less water on the leaves; reduces chances of a foliar disease
         - Foliage should never remain wet overnight
 Organic Mulches

      - 2-4" layer of organic mulches should be adequate
Importance of organic mulch:                                                                                 - Conserves soil moisture, keep soil cooler, and reduce water needs
      - Helps reduce soil compaction

Pests
Pests of vegetables are very dangerous.they reduce the food quality, make food unsuitable for eaten.farmer are suffering much for these pests because pests reduce the market valu of foods.    - Many insects are beneficial
      - We should Identify the pest before attempting control
  Control:
         a. Exclusion (fencing etc)
         b. Repellents ( dried blood, moth balls, mixture of red pepper, glue & water)
